Help! I Need Somebody – Do We Miss The Obvious?

[The_Beatles-Help]

HELP!

Breaking onto the music scene in 1965, HELP! was a major hit around the world, as a single, LP (disc) & as a film.

Explosive from the beginning, the driving rhythm carried us through from beginning to end.

Very few of us at that time really considered the lyrics: it was just another great song from the writing duo of John Lennon & Paul McCartney , performed by the Fab Four.

It is only as we look a bit closer at the lyrics that we begin to see the pain hidden (or not so hidden) by the bouncy tune.  Those of us who saw the film simply related the song to a slightly off-beat story of the Beatles, but perhaps there was a lot more to it.  The words would certainly suggest so:

Help, I need somebody
Help, not just anybody
Help, you know I need someone, help

When I was younger so much younger than today
I never needed anybody’s help in any way
But now these days are gone, I’m not so self assured
Now I find I’ve changed my mind and opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being ’round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won’t you please, please help me

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
But every now and then I feel so insecure
I know that I just need you like I’ve never done before

Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being ’round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won’t you please, please help me

When I was younger so much younger than today
I never needed anybody’s help in any way
But now these days are gone, I’m not so self assured
Now I find I’ve changed my mind and opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round
Help me, get my feet back on the ground
Won’t you please, please help me, help me, help me, ooh

It set me thinking about how many times I look at a situation, a relationship, a person & although the signs are obviously shouting “There’s something wrong!” or “Please help me!” I miss them & just see the good, or the happy or the superficial. Perhaps that is because it’s often easier to see a situation that doesn’t need our help rather than see the situation as it really is & understand what a commitment it may actually require, from me.

So I speak to myself as much as anyone else as I ask,

“Is there somebody that I can help in some way, whether that is because I have either been avoiding the signs or I have been so tied-up with my own problems & circumstances that I just did not see the signs?”

Until next time …

About waywood

Hi & Welcome to my thoughts. I share subjects that are important to me. As you’ll notice, these subjects can be quite broad & varied. I like variety; I like breadth & I like a challenge. I am passionate about helping others overcome their fears, grow in confidence & succeed. Although many people would label me as an achiever, I have battled low confidence, low self-esteem & a couple of nasty, long periods depression over the years. I can’t say, “I know how you feel” but I can hopefully empathise & offer some of the things that are helping me to turn my life around. Please feel free to comment, share & enjoy. Take care, best wishes & keep well Stuart
