… so stated Sir Terry Wogan on his Radio 2 Breakfast Show a few years ago.
The answer was apparently given by a man in Dublin when he was asked by a tourist how to get to the airport.
The comment made me smile when I heard it.
I was recently wondering how many times in our life, looking back, we would have thought, “Well, if I’m going to get there, this is not a good place to start from!“?
That’s the beauty of life & often the beauty & advantage of hindsight, but the reality is, we DID get to where we went, from where we should never have started!! 🙂
Often in our lives circumstances are far from ideal; the business climate is poor; trends in the economy are in the wrong direction; relationships are not going well; the job is a struggle; we find it hard to make people aware of how we feel. In these situations it can be too easy to give up or stop making progress because we can’t see a way out. We forget the conviction we had to make our business idea a reality & succeed; we forget that we’d committed ourselves to each other for better for worse; we forget that in many cases, we’ve been in a similar situation before … and we have survived or succeeded.
I guess where I’m heading with these thoughts is that very rarely are we in ideal circumstances to achieve anything significant. But it is often in those same circumstances that we learn most; we learn new strategies; we learn to see things differently; we choose to keep on even though the signs are not very good. We find a way through!
I call it life 🙂 One may also call it a career.
Very rarely would we start from here to get to where we want to go, but the reality is, we do usually get there & we learn a lot on the way, which I also think we call experience.
How about you; what do you think? I’d love to hear from you.
Until next time …
